Access to safe and reliable drinking water remains a major challenge in many rural communities across Nigeria. Women and children especially spend several hours daily fetching water from unsafe sources such as streams, ponds, and shallow wells, exposing them to waterborne diseases and limiting economic productivity and educational opportunities.
Daso Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Perth, Western Australia, seeks financial support from individuals and corporate organizations for the construction of solar-powered borehole water supply systems with overhead reservoir tanks in five underserved Nigerian communities:
- Obamo Community, Oyo State
- Afejewe Community, Oyo State
- Ogogo Community, Oyo State
- Agwan Shuaibu Community, Kaduna State
- Odaire–Okene Community, Kogi State
The intervention will deliver sustainable, clean, and climate-resilient water infrastructure to improve public health, strengthen community capacity, and provide a long-term water solution.
In the target communities, access to potable water is either inadequate or completely absent. Residents depend on unsafe surface water or seasonal sources that expose them to waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea.
Fuel-powered boreholes, where available, are unreliable due to high operating costs and poor maintenance. Climate change and rising fuel prices have worsened water insecurity. A solar-powered borehole system offers a clean, cost-effective, and sustainable alternative.
The primary objective is to provide safe, reliable, and sustainable water supply to underserved rural communities.
Specific Objectives
- Improve public health by reducing waterborne diseases
- Enhance community capacity through training and local ownership
- Reduce the burden on women and children
- Promote renewable energy and climate-resilient infrastructure
- Establish long-term, low-maintenance water systems
Target Communities
Obamo Community – Oyo State
- A rural agrarian settlement without functional potable water infrastructure.
Afejewe Community – Oyo State
- Relies on seasonal streams that dry up during the dry season.
Ogogo Community – Oyo State
- Experiences recurring health challenges linked to unsafe water sources.
Agwan Shuaibu Community – Kaduna State
- A northern community affected by water scarcity and population pressure.
Odaire–Okene Community – Kogi State
- Depends on shallow wells prone to contamination and failure.
